Many may think talk is cheap, where actions speak louder than words. But as our current members at Nexus Networking Group know, there are many ways to grow your business through the art of public speaking.
Easy and cheap ways to raise your profile is through lectures, presentations or Q&As on your business, these are also the most common ways of getting your product and/or service across to like-minded business networkers. However, not everyone finds public speaking easy.
Through our top tips, you may find speaking in public can become easier, eradicating the fear factor and ultimately being able to feel comfortable and confident in terms of projecting your company further.
If you know it, talk about it!
One thing worth reminding yourself is that everyone is unique, no matter what industry or business you’re in – everyone has their own opinion from a wide range of backgrounds. Your background, your history and your experience are unique that many will find interesting to hear.
People love to hear others share their unique perspectives. Use material from your past or present as an avenue into your content. It allows others to enter your world and experience it through your eyes.
Like a Cheshire Cat… Smile!
Smile. It is standard advice in sales and customer service to smile while talking with a new/existing customer, when talking about your business or experiences within a networking environment smiling should still apply.
Not only will you come across confident, your audience will feel happier too. Another worthwhile approach is to look your audience in the eye. Even if you don’t feel it, these two points will make you appear cool and calm under pressure. Remember, confidence is courageous and contagious.
It’s all in the timing
Practice makes perfect, right? There’s no harm practicing a speech ahead of a networking event. Try and aim to deliver your message in a few sharp and clear sentences, sometimes less is more after all.
Talky talky, happy talk
Everyone likes to laugh – show me someone who doesn’t enjoy a humorous speech and I’ll book them an appointment with the doctor!
If you’ve ever been to a wedding, nine times out of ten a best man’s speech contains some humour along the way, amongst other things…
In terms of business content, while it should be professional it might also be worth containing the odd funny line. Not only will it brighten up your audience’s lives, it also endears us to a speaker and their message.
Nevertheless, think about your environment. Don’t fill up your speech with one liners from a Tim Vine gig. You’re there to promote and network after all.
A Picture paints a thousand words. Incorporate pictures within your presentation, by either describing verbally or using real images to capture the audience’s attention. If you let your visual imagination flow, you’ll be amazed where it takes you, and your audience.
Don’t give up
If you’re an individual that has an undercurrent of self–doubt and vulnerability, then you need to eradicate that thought.
Try and try again. Keep on getting up and giving it a go. No matter how badly you feel it went (it’s never as bad as you think), get up, dust yourself down and go again – after all, none of us are perfect.
All you need to do if focus on improving through practice. Set a few goals. Review them. Adjust them. Push yourself.
Take that first step. Step forward and take the opportunity. By starting, and breaking through any fear you have, even for a moment, you’ll find that in no time you will be unstoppable. And you’ll be communicating more efficiently with your staff and connecting more effectively with existing and new customers in and outside the networking circle.
